Transhippers

Reducing the project’s environmental footprint compared to developing a deep-water port.

In a Western Australian first, MinRes has commissioned fully enclosed, self-discharging transhippers to support our dust-free transport solution for the Onslow Iron project.

The innovative transport solution will help unlock billions of tonnes of stranded iron ore deposits from the West Pilbara region.

Transhippers significantly reduce the project’s environmental footprint compared to developing a deep-water port, which would require substantial dredging and capital investment.

MinRes is set to establish one of the largest and most sophisticated transhipping operations in Australia.

Each transhipper has a 20,000-tonne capacity and will transport ore to awaiting ocean going vessels anchored 40km offshore.

Articulated tug and barge

Barges have been constructed in China and are named after islands off the Pilbara coast, while the tugs are named after Norwegian gods.

Each barge is propelled by powerful tugs that provide crew with home-like comforts, including state of the art communications systems, helping seafarers stay in touch with loved ones.

The tugs link to the barges – forming a transhipper – via an articulated tug and barge arrangement (ATB).

The ATB configuration offers versatility and reliability for transhippers, allowing bespoke features to be incorporated into the design.
