MinRes and Foodbank bring nutrition education to WA classrooms

Published on 28 March 2024

Mineral Resources (MinRes) is proud to announce a major partnership with Foodbank WA to help Western Australian schoolchildren develop a healthy relationship with food.

MinRes’ commitment of $450,000 over three years will co-fund on the delivery of Foodbank WA’s nom! Schools nutritional education program in classrooms across WA.

As the rising cost of living bites, more families are skipping meals or opting for cheaper and less nutritious foods – including school children in vulnerable communities.

That’s where nom! Schools comes in – complementing Foodbank WA’s successful School Breakfast program as a comprehensive, hands-on nutrition education and cooking initiative.

The program sees qualified nutritionists visit schools to host fun and engaging sessions for kids and parents, including cooking classes and eating together.

This evidence-based program helps adults and children make sustainable changes to encourage healthy lifestyles and greater cooking confidence.

Delivered throughout March and April 2024, the program will visit dozens of schools including 12 in the Pilbara region near MinRes operations.

On Wednesday, MinRes General Manager, People Facilities & Operations Beth Ibrahim joined Foodbank WA’s CEO Kate O’Hara and Pilbara Minerals Chief Operating Officer Vince De Carolis to announce the partnership. Pilbara Minerals will co-fund the initiative alongside MinRes.

Beth and Vince visited Ashburton Drive Primary School in Gosnells, where the first two sessions of this year’s program were delivered to a class of excited pupils.

“MinRes’ social investment framework prioritises health and wellbeing, stronger communities and economic empowerment – all outcomes that are core to the nom! Schools program.” Beth said.

“We know that making the decision to eat healthy early in life can be truly transformation in later years. That’s why we’re so thrilled to help Foodbank WA empower these kids with the right cooking skills and mindset during their crucial years of schooling.”

Kate added: “We are thankful to both MinRes and Pilbara Minerals for their support of nom! Schools — enabling us to deliver this important program across Western Australia.”
